Kathak – Historical perspective

Broadly, the Kathak timeline can be divided into five phases.

The ancient, evolutionary phase

The need for any stage art has its roots in the most elementary human urge to express a sentiment in a dramatised fashion. The case of Kathak is no different. The performance percolated from generation to generation of Kathak performers for centuries in the pre-Christ era and was mostly performed in temple courtyards or village squares. This was the infant phase of Kathak when it was toddling and learning to stand up on its own feet as a dance form. Also, it was a pure art form then, performed solely to satisfy the artist’s urge to express, and that’s why it can be analogised with a painting tradition’s synonym as art for art’s sake.
